The Miami Dolphins boast a rich assembly of talent in their running back corps, presenting a challenge as the team endeavors to trim its roster for the upcoming season. Among the skilled ball carriers, one may find themselves without a spot as competition intensifies.

The Dolphins’ backfield is currently composed of De’Von Achane, Salvon Ahmed, Chris Brooks, Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson Jr., and newcomer Jaylen Wright. Given the dazzling performances and strategic draft investments, some players are more securely positioned than others.

Analyzing the roster, it’s apparent that players like Ahmed and Brooks are long shots for securing team jerseys. However, the focal point shifts to those whose futures with the team are in jeopardy.

Mostert and Achane, who both had standout 2023 seasons, along with Wright, fresh off a fourth-round draft pick, are seemingly secure. This analysis suggests Jeff Wilson Jr. could be the expendable member, potentially being cut from the team.

Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team offered insights into potential surprises awaiting the Dolphins’ roster decisions, pointing out Wilson as a candidate for release. Given the team’s salary cap constraints and the addition of young talent, moving Wilson could save Miami $1.2 million.

Jeff Wilson Jr.’s journey from an undrafted free agent from North Texas to a notable 2020 season with the 49ers, wherein he amassed 600 yards and seven touchdowns, paints a picture of his capabilities. His tenure with Miami saw him contributing significantly in 2020, but last season, his output diminished to 188 yards over 10 games. In contrast, Mostert and Achane delivered impressive seasons, combined with Wright’s promising collegiate performance, potentially crowding Wilson out of the picture.

The shelf life of an NFL running back can be notably short, and Wilson’s situation underscores this harsh reality. With the Dolphins potentially moving forward without him, it opens a chapter of uncertainty for Wilson’s career, albeit with the potential for rejuvenation with another squad. As the team embraces its emerging talents, the upcoming season may bid farewell to a once integral piece of their offense.
