The Miami Dolphins have taken a step to bolster their offensive lineup by picking USC standout Tahj Washington in the seventh round of the 2024 NFL Draft. The young wide receiver is poised to potentially fill a crucial role in the team’s strategy, ideally becoming the third wideout option behind the dynamic duo of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.

Finding a reliable third receiver for quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was an ongoing challenge throughout the previous season, prompting the Dolphins, under the guidance of Chris Grier and the management team, to make strategic moves this offseason. Among these were acquiring experienced tight end Jonnu Smith from the Atlanta Falcons, enhancing the starting tight end position, and signing the celebrated wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., following extensive rumors and speculation.

While these free agency signings have undeniably strengthened Miami’s receiving corps, the Dolphins are also looking towards their newcomers to quickly step up into leading roles. USC’s Tahj Washington could be exactly the kind of talent they need. During his remarkable tenure at USC in 2023, Washington emerged as a prime target for Caleb Williams, the No. 1 pick overall, amassing 59 receptions for 1,062 yards and eight touchdowns, translating to an impressive average of 18 yards per catch.

Washington’s suitability for the Miami Dolphins’ offensive system seems clear. His knack for gaining yards after the catch should seamlessly integrate into the team’s playbook, enhancing their aerial threat.

Moreover, his exceptional ability to maintain control over his body and secure contested catches adds a dimension that the Dolphins have sought outside of their star receivers Hill and Waddle. Despite the contributions from Braxton Berrios and River Cracraft last season, consistency in the third wideout spot remained elusive.

Bringing a balanced mix of playing across the slot (44%) and out wide (56%), as noted by Pro Football Focus, Washington’s versatility is a significant asset for Head Coach Mike McDaniel, offering flexibility in offensive configurations. Considering the attention Hill and Waddle command from defenses, Washington could find ample opportunities to shine during the 2024 season, especially exploiting the center of the field.

The primary critique against Washington leading up to the draft has been his size, standing at just 5’10” and weighing 174 pounds. Additionally, there’s been speculation about the extent to which his performance was elevated by playing with an elite quarterback like Caleb Williams at USC. However, the well-crafted plays that capitalized on Washington’s ability to make impactful runs argue in his favor.

Although Beckham currently leads as the favorite for the third receiver slot, at 31 with a recent history of injuries, the Dolphins are on the lookout for younger talent to step up as consistent contributors and potential starting options in the future.

Washington’s contribution isn’t expected to be limited to offense; his participation in special teams is also anticipated. Recognizing the value of special teams, Washington expressed his enthusiasm and competitive spirit for being involved in any capacity on the field.

As Washington prepares to join the ranks with accomplished receivers like Hill and Waddle, the learning opportunity and exposure to high-level professional play could be pivotal for his development. Keeping an eye on Washington will be crucial as the Dolphins continue their offseason, considering the long-term potential he brings to the team’s wide receiver lineup.
