Tyreek Hill Injured as Trade Rumors Heat Up — Dolphins Shut Down the Noise

As the Miami Dolphins gear up for another season, General Manager Chris Grier is once again in the spotlight, demonstrating his usual patience with player development. Grier’s approach often involves taking a gamble on draft picks or securing bargain free agents with the hope they’ll grow into their potential.

This strategy has its advocates and detractors. While some fans argue that the Dolphins have historically cut ties with players too hastily, under Grier’s stewardship, the opposite concern has emerged: perhaps the team sometimes holds on to players longer than it should.

The debate around player development is nuanced. There are instances where patience pays off, as seen with Austin Jackson, but there are also cautionary tales, like Noah Igbinoghene’s extended yet unfruitful tenure with the team. It’s a delicate balance, understanding that while the Dolphins have a depth of insights beyond those of fans and media, it doesn’t guarantee infallibility in their decisions.

Looking ahead to 2024, there are a few Dolphins players under particular scrutiny to prove their worth. Among them is Cam Smith, who, despite a challenging first season under coach Vic Fangio, remains on the roster. Smith seemed an ill fit for Fangio’s scheme, and even in times of injury-induced shortages, Fangio looked past him, suggesting Grier’s decision to keep him may have been a point of contention.

With a coaching change and Anthony Weaver taking the helm of the defense, Smith faces a pivotal year. Weaver has a track record of elevating the play of his secondary unit, and if Smith can’t capitalize on this opportunity to develop, the team may need to consider moving on, especially if a more promising prospect emerges from an unexpected corner of the roster. The Dolphins’ strategy of nurturing talent is commendable, but as these players enter the 2024 season, the time is ripe for them to validate Grier’s patience with tangible performance improvements.
