Cam Smith, the Miami Dolphins’ second-round pick from the 2023 NFL Draft, is setting his sights on a significant comeback in the 2024 season. Drafted 52nd overall from South Carolina, Smith primarily contributed on special teams during his rookie year, which is not typically expected from second-round selections who are often seen competing for starting roles.

Following a rookie season that might not have met the high expectations often reserved for players picked in his position, Smith is eager to move forward and make his mark in the coming year. Ryan Slowik, the Dolphins’ defensive backs coach and pass game specialist, has expressed excitement over Smith’s approach to the new season.

“Cam has been great so far. He has the energy to attack this season…

He’s living in the present. He’s ready for this to get rolling,” Slowik commented, highlighting Smith’s positive demeanor and readiness for training camp.

Slowik also noted Smith’s dedication and hunger to prove himself, a crucial mindset as he heads into Year 2. This determination is evident in his participation in team meetings, his eagerness to learn, and his overall holistic approach to his development.

Dolphins Head Coach Mike McDaniel stressed the importance of the coaching staff’s role in unlocking Smith’s potential. McDaniel pointed out that timelines for player development vary and that the focus is on Smith’s continuous improvement and competitive development. “I’m excited for the competition and the development, because that’s really what I’m into and what we’re all in this for,” McDaniel stated, indicating a collective effort towards Smith’s progression.

Smith’s debut season saw him limited to just 20 defensive snaps across four games, and he was inactive for three games. This significantly low snap count set him apart from his rookie second-round draft peers and marked a challenging start to his NFL career. Notably, Smith and Isaiah Foskey from New Orleans were the only two from their draft class to play fewer than 300 offensive or defensive snaps.

Despite the slow start, there’s optimism surrounding Smith as the Dolphins have had a history of successful second-round cornerbacks, such as Sam Madison, Patrick Surtain, and Xavien Howard. While these players saw considerable action in their rookie seasons, Smith’s journey reminds us that paths to success vary. With the 2024 season on the horizon, the early signs suggest that Smith is on the right track to rebound and contribute more significantly to the Dolphins’ defense.
