Stephen A. Smith went on a fiery rant on ESPN’s First Take, defending LeBron James from criticism over his son Bronny’s draft into the NBA. Smith argued that nepotism has been prevalent in the league, particularly among white individuals, and yet James is facing backlash for his son’s opportunity.

The ESPN analyst emphasized that the NBA has a history of nepotism, with white executives, coaches, and players often giving preferential treatment to family members or friends. He pointed out that this practice has been accepted without much scrutiny, yet LeBron James is being singled out for his influence in Bronny’s draft.

We live in a country where nepotism has taken place with white folks religiously forever. We've said little to nothing about it. In the NBA specifically, in a league where at least 70% of the players are Black, we've seen nepotism with white folks all over the place ... and now this happens with LeBron James, a member of the Mount Rushmore of basketball, and all of a sudden you've got people running their mouths.

Stephen A. Smith said on ESPN’s First Take

Stephen A. Smith spoke for more than five minutes straight about the role nepotism played in the Lakers' selection of Bronny James.

Stephen A. Smith also mentioned that James’ stature in the league likely played a role in Bronny’s selection, but he argued that this is not unique to the four-time NBA winner. He claimed that King James is an all-time great player who has earned his status, and that his influence on Bronny’s career is not surprising.

Smith spoke about the double standard that exists in the NBA, where white individuals have historically benefited from nepotism without facing the same level of criticism as James. He urged fans to acknowledge and accept the reality of nepotism in the league, rather than unfairly targeting the NBA All-time leading scorer for his son’s success.

Lakers GM Rob Pelinka addresses Bronny James selection

Los Angeles Lakers General Manager Rob Pelinka addressed the team’s decision to draft Bronny James with the 55th overall pick in the 2024 NBA draft. While the potential for a historic father-son moment on the court is exciting, Pelinka emphasized that Bronny’s talent and character were the primary reasons for his selection.

Bronny is, first and foremost, a person of high character. And second, he is a young man that works incredibly hard. Those are the qualities we look for in drafting players and adding to our developmental corps at the Lakers. ... Coach Redick and I were able to welcome him to the Lakers family and let him know that this moment was happening mostly because of the work he's put into the game.

Rob Pelinka said in a press conference

Pelinka also discussed the next steps in Bronny’s development, including a likely appearance in the Summer League, which begins on July 6. The team will work with Bronny to create a development plan that will allow him to contribute to the Lakers early in his career.

Pelinka’s comments come at a time when the team awaits James’ decision on his future with the organization, with a $51.4 million player option looming. As the Lakers look to the future, Bronny’s selection has brought an exciting opportunity for the team to watch the father-son duo dominate the NBA courts.
