The Miami Dolphins dominated the NFL in terms of rushing efficiency during the 2023 season, leading the league in both rushing touchdowns and yards per carry. With seasoned halfback Raheem Mostert at the fore and rookie third-round draft pick De’Von Achane making significant impacts, the Dolphins’ run game was fearsome against defenses across the league.

Despite such a commanding performance, Miami sought to further bolster their backfield in the 2024 NFL Draft, selecting Jaylen Wright in the fourth round after exchanging a third-round pick of 2025 to secure his talents.

However, when ESPN’s Mike Clay ranked the NFL backfields, the strengthened Dolphins group found themselves in a lower tier than might be expected. Miami was ranked ninth, trailing eight other NFL teams despite their statistical dominance the previous season. Rankings included:

1. San Francisco 49ers

2. Detroit Lions

3. Atlanta Falcons

4. Seattle Seahawks

5. New York Jets

6. Philadelphia Eagles

7. Baltimore Ravens

8. Indianapolis Colts

9. Miami Dolphins

In Miami, Mostert, Achane, the newly drafted Wright, and Jeff Wilson Jr. form a formidable quartet. Yet, teams like the San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions were judged to have more effective collections of running talent.

Such rankings invite heated discussions about the criteria used to judge these backfields and whether statistics from one season reliably predict performance in the next. Either way, it’s clear that the Dolphins are not resting and aim to climb higher in future evaluations, perhaps leveraging their newest addition, Wright, to an even more productive rushing campaign.
