Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is eligible for a new contract, yet the two sides haven’t been able to strike a deal, but that won’t keep him off the field and away from his teammates as training camp gets underway.

Despite the fact that Tagovailoa is slated to play out the 2024 season on the fifth-year option of his rookie contract, the 26-year-old plans to replicate his participation in this spring’s minicamp and OTA practices during training camp this summer.

According to a report from NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe, Tagovailoa plans to participate in individual drills and seven-on-seven periods, while sitting out full-team periods, as he did during the spring.

Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa will participate similar to OTAs during training camp. He did individual drills and 7-on-7 drills but not any 11-on-11 drills.
HC Mike McDaniel said it’s important to acknowledge Tua is in the process of contract negotiations and it’s fluid.

“It’s very fluid,” Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel told reporters. “We’re taking it day by day, today I expect it to be kind of like OTAs and we’ll move on from there.”

Tagovailoa led one of the league’s most explosive offenses last season, with the likes of Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and D’Von Achane at his disposal.

Only the Dallas Cowboys averaged more points per game than the Dolphins’ 29.2 while Tagovailoa completed a career-high 69.3 percent of his passes for 4,624 yards with 29 touchdowns to 14 interceptions.

Despite Tagovailoa leading the league in passing last season, the Dolphins have yet to reach an agreement with their franchise quarterback.

This offseason has seen Trevor Lawrence obliterate the quarterback market, after signing a five-year contract worth $275 million that includes $200 million guaranteed. Likewise, Jared Goff and Kirk Cousins were among the signal callers who signed mega-deals at the position this offseason.

Could Tagovailoa be next?

Spotrac projects Tagovailoa’s market value at upwards of $52.6 million, annually, which would make him the fourth-highest-paid quarterback in the league, surpassing Justin Herbert for that spot.

In addition to Tagovailoa, the Dolphins also need to find some sort of resolution with one of his most dynamic weapons, Tyreek Hill, at a position that has seen its market completely explode in recent months.

The Dolphins have some difficult, and expensive decisions to make, while staring down the barrel at being $12.7 million over the cap in 2025.
