As the NFL preseason winds down, the Miami Dolphins find themselves at a crossroads regarding their backup quarterback situation behind Tua Tagovailoa. With roster cuts looming, it’s crunch time for Dolphins’ General Manager Chris Grier to make a critical decision.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson (17) signals during the first half of an NFL preseason football game at Cleveland Browns Stadium, Saturday, Aug. 17, 2024, in Cleveland, Ohio.

Currently, the competition between Mike White and Skylar Thompson has not yielded a clear front-runner. Both quarterbacks have struggled throughout the preseason, completing less than 50 percent of their passes in their respective outings. White recorded 142 passing yards with a passer rating of 56.3, while Thompson slightly edged him with 156 yards, adding one touchdown and an interception, culminating in a 57.9 passer rating.

These underwhelming performances indicate that the Dolphins could face significant challenges should Tagovailoa be sidelined at any point during the season. Hence, attention has turned towards potential external solutions, particularly spotlighting a trade prospect from the Cleveland Browns, quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson.

Reports from The Athletic’s Zac Jackson suggest that the Browns, who have Thompson-Robinson slated as their third-string quarterback behind Deshaun Watson and Jameis Winston, have engaged in preliminary trade discussions about him. The Draft Network’s Justin Melo highlights Miami as a prime destination for Thompson-Robinson, citing Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel’s proven track record with quarterbacks and the potential fit within his offensive scheme.

Throughout the preseason, Thompson-Robinson has shown significant promise, completing 27 of 35 passes for 260 yards. Despite not throwing any touchdowns and registering one interception, his overall performance and a passer rating of 85.4 outshine Miami’s current backup options. His preseason successes, paired with noticeable development at practice, position him as a potentially valuable asset under McDaniel’s mentorship.

As the Dolphins weigh their options, the feasibility of acquiring Thompson-Robinson hinges on the trade terms set by the Browns. However, if Cleveland opts to release him, Miami could seize an opportunity to secure a high-upside, low-risk quarterback to bolster their roster depth.

With the decision deadline fast approaching, the Dolphins’ next steps could prove pivotal in solidifying their quarterback lineup for the upcoming NFL season.
