The Miami Dolphins are poised to determine their backup quarterback for Tua Tagovailoa by Tuesday, with Skylar Thompson emerging as the likely choice after a standout preseason performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Head coach Mike McDaniel previously indicated a close competition between Thompson and incumbent Mike White, who secured the backup role in 2023. However, neither quarterback significantly distinguished themselves in the early preseason games, with White completing 15-of-34 for 142 yards and Thompson matching closely at 16-of-34 for 156 yards.

Challenges such as injuries to key receivers and weaker backup offensive lines were factors in their struggle, but it wasn’t until Friday’s game that a clear frontrunner seemed to emerge. White’s tepid performance of five completions on nine attempts for 37 yards contrasted sharply with Thompson’s dynamic play. Thompson energized the team with two lengthy touchdown drives, 70 and 76 yards respectively, marked by impressive throws, showcasing his capability to lead the offense effectively.

Despite a late-game interception, Thompson’s overall performance resonated well with McDaniel. “I think Skylar did a great job tonight,” McDaniel commented post-game. “He was competitive, made some plays, and kind of got us going tonight.”

Financial considerations might also sway the Dolphins’ decision. Thompson’s salary cap hit stands at $1,005,552 for 2024, substantially lower than White’s $5,210,000. Cutting White could recoup the team $3.5 million, which presents a significant budgetary incentive to prefer Thompson.

Coach McDaniel held back from confirming any final decisions on Friday night, but Thompson’s compelling outing likely tipped the scales in his favor, simplifying what had been a close contest into potentially a clear-cut decision for the Dolphins as they prepare for the upcoming NFL season.
