Quinn Ewers is turning heads in Dolphins camp as Miami hints at a possible shake-up in the quarterback depth chart.

Quinn Ewers is already turning heads at Dolphins training camp, and he’s not wasting any time making his presence felt in Miami. Drafted in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft, the former Texas Longhorn isn’t just showing up to hold a clipboard – he’s out to challenge the depth chart.
And make no mistake: while Ewers may be listed third behind Tua Tagovailoa and Zach Wilson for now, he’s doing everything he can to make this a real competition.
Head coach Mike McDaniel addressed the situation on Wednesday. When asked about the quarterback hierarchy, he was clear about who currently holds the backup role but left the door open for things to change.
“Zach is doing a great job. Zach is the backup quarterback and it’s up to the players to adjust to that,” McDaniel said. “There’s no such thing as non-competition, and I think Quinn’s the type of person that is every day trying to make that a real competition.”
Translation? If Ewers keeps doing what he’s doing on the practice field – showing command of the offense, throwing with confidence, and pushing the tempo – McDaniel’s open to revisiting the conversation.
Right now, though, it’s Wilson’s job to lose. But with Ewers starting to stack highlight plays in practice, the coaching staff is watching. Closely.
And let’s be honest – the backup job in Miami is no ceremonial role, not with Tua Tagovailoa’s injury history. Tagovailoa has dealt with multiple concussions in his young NFL career, including one that sidelined him for four games early last season. That history has sparked real concern at points, even raising questions about his long-term health and career outlook.
So, if Ewers claims the No. 2 spot, it’s not just symbolic. There’s a very real chance he could be called into action.
Of course, durability has also been a concern for Ewers. During his time at Texas, he missed seven games due to various injuries.
Most recently, an oblique injury opened the door for Arch Manning to get his first two starts. But when Ewers returned, he steered the Longhorns right back into the College Football Playoff.
That bounce-back moment showed flashes of the poise and arm talent that once made Ewers one of the most anticipated quarterbacks in college football.
Some scouts and analysts believed that Ewers’ durability concerns, along with an uneven college resume, were key reasons he slipped all the way to Day 3 of the draft. But if he continues trending upward, Miami might be sitting on one of the steals of the 2025 class.
His first real opportunity to show it in live NFL action comes soon – August 10, when the Dolphins travel to Chicago for their preseason opener against the Bears. That’s likely when we’ll get our first look at Ewers facing another defense wearing a different jersey.
It won’t decide the depth chart on its own, but it’s step one in what could be a fascinating training camp story. The regular season kicks off September 7, when the Dolphins host the Colts. Between now and then, Ewers has a narrow window to make his case.
Is there a QB shakeup brewing in Miami? Not yet – but if Ewers keeps lighting up practice, it’s not out of the question. Keep an eye on this one.
