Dolphins-Chiefs trade pitch sends $4M low-risk talent to Miami after injury bug hammers secondary image

The Miami Dolphins have had a turbulent offseason, filled with difficult decisions. Some stemmed from financial constraints, while others were driven by fractured relationships. One of the more surprising revelations came from an anonymous scout who told Athlon Sports that Jalen Ramsey’s departure was less about money and more about a broken relationship with head coach Mike McDaniel.

“The broken relationship between Jalen Ramsey and McDaniel is why he’s on the trade block,” said the anonymous scout. “No one has been able to explain what happened, but I was told this actually has nothing to do with money. It’s a vote of no confidence in McDaniel. If the Ramsey trade goes down, this is a huge talent drain in the secondary.”

There’s no doubt Ramsey was the Dolphins’ top cornerback when healthy, and his absence has left a major void. That void, however, comes as injuries continue to mount across Miami’s secondary. Over the weekend, the Dolphins signed two veteran corners to help stabilize the unit.

“Miami signed veteran cornerback Mike Hilton to help bolster the unit, NFL Network’s Cam Wolfe reported on Saturday. The Dolphins announced earlier in the day that they had signed cornerback Jack Jones,” NFL.com’s Eric Edholm wrote.

Then, more bad news struck. On Wednesday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that cornerback Kader Kohou suffered a partial ACL tear, further thinning the depth chart. The injury bug just keeps hitting the Dolphins hard.

In response to the growing concern in the secondary, ESPN’s Seth Walder suggested a potential low-risk trade for Chiefs cornerback Joshua Williams.

“Williams does have some encouraging numbers over his first three seasons. Across 769 coverage snaps, he has allowed 0.9 yards per snap — better than average — and 0.6 over the past two years, albeit in a small sample. Miami looks more like a team in flux than a franchise looking to add talent before the season. But given the state of the Dolphins’ cornerback group, a low-risk maneuver like this would make sense,” Walder wrote.

A move for Williams could prove beneficial for Miami. He’s still on a manageable rookie contract and could add much-needed depth. If the opportunity allows him to flourish, the Dolphins may find themselves with a valuable piece in the secondary at minimal cost.
