The Los Angeles Lakers lack athleticism on their current roster, but Bronny James has plenty. The 20-year-old can get up and has the quickness to keep up with the many talented point guards in the Western Conference. James showed continued growth in summer league, but it is his athletic ability that may get him on the floor this season.
Fans have seen athletic backup guards carve out significant roles in recent years. Head coach JJ Redick made it clear that he wants Bronny to play like two undersized guards who make a living playing hard and being athletic. He isn’t his father. Bronny must use his unique skills to carve out a role. The Lakers’ perimeter defense is a worry. Marcus Smart has taken a step back and struggled to stay healthy since leaving Boston. If he misses time, LA has to rely on Rui Hachimura, Austin Reaves, or Jake LaRavia to defend at the point of attack. Those are not ideal options for Redick as all lack the required athleticism in certain matchups. That is where Bronny could come in.
Be it the monster dunk or James blowing past his man, Lakers supporters saw his athleticism in summer league. Those are not things even Luka Doncic is doing at this stage. LeBron can still do it, but opts against it at his age. If the Lakers need that pop and energy, Bronny is their best chance at getting it.

Los Angeles has their sights set on title contention. Fans saw versatility play a key role in the Thunder and Celtics winning the last two rings. The Lakers need different ways to play if they want to win it all. Having an athletic guard capable of making an impact on both ends of the floor is ideal. Bronny could be that player if he continues to improve his game.
The path to playing time is simple. Gabe Vincent has struggled since joining the Lakers, and the 29-year-old may slip completely out of the rotation if things don’t improve. LA needs a backup guard to help handle the ball, make plays, space the floor, and defend on the perimeter. There is a path to Bronny being better in that role than Vincent by the end of this season.
Rob Pelinka and the front office expanded the Lakers’ versatility this offseason. They could only go small last season after the trade for Luka Doncic. Now, Deandre Ayton gives them a center to dominate in the middle. Smart and LaRavia provide added depth. Redick has options, including increasing the Lakers’ athleticism by giving Bronny James some run.
Los Angeles Lakers fans should not expect too much from the undersized 20-year-old guard. He is still developing his game and must round out crucial parts. Bronny is a special talent who looks like a future rotation player. It is all about continued development. So far, so good in Los Angeles. Hopefully, the best is still yet to come.
