Kansas City, MO – July 25, 2025
Offseason in Kansas City always sparks questions, but few have generated as much debate as the Chiefs’ decision to bring back a once-controversial running back for another year.
After a 2024 campaign that fell short of expectations, many wondered if the veteran’s time in red and gold had finally run out. The numbers were pedestrian, the explosiveness seemed faded, and the running back’s spot on the depth chart felt anything but secure.
That’s when head coach Andy Reid stepped to the mic and changed the conversation. The Super Bowl-winning coach, known for both his tough standards and rare loyalty, made it clear: the door wasn’t closing yet. “He had a massive workload last season, but the efficiency just wasn’t there. Still, we believe he deserves another chance. He’ll get one more season to prove he still belongs — because I trust he’s got more to offer this team.
”For Kareem Hunt, it’s an unexpected chapter. Once an NFL rushing champion and Pro Bowl star with the Chiefs in 2017, Hunt’s journey has been anything but linear. He electrified Arrowhead in his rookie year, only to see it all unravel after a high-profile suspension and midseason release in 2018.Returning to Kansas City in 2024 after a winding stop with the Browns, Hunt found himself in a backup role behind Isiah Pacheco. He managed 411 rushing yards and 2 TDs on 93 carries, plus 101 receiving yards, contributing to a playoff push and a Super Bowl LVIII ring.
But for every clutch moment, there were questions about lost burst and inconsistent production. His PFF grade of 75.3 reflected flashes of vintage talent, but the highlight reel runs were few and far between.
Still, Andy Reid’s faith is unwavering. With another one-year contract now signed, Hunt will compete with Elijah Mitchell and a deep running back room to prove there’s still gas in the tank. For Chiefs Kingdom, it’s a storyline to watch: Can Kareem Hunt author one last comeback — or will this truly be the end of a career defined by both promise and turbulence?Stay tuned to ESPN!
