The Miami Dolphins have faced harsh criticism long before their team has even taken the field for the first time in 2025. What started with a concerning lack of depth in the cornerback room became a nationally discussed short coming when Jalen Ramsey was sent to Pittsburgh. After two seasons ended in training camp, the staff is leaning on fifth round rookie cornerback Jason Marshall Jr. to potentially save their jobs.
Marshall was a four year starter at the University of Florida. Starting at cornerback, the six-foot-even speedster was revered for his physicality.
Now with a need at nickel back, the staff is turning to Marshall. The only problem? Marshall has never played nickel in his life.
“It’s difficult to pinpoint the exact date that Marshall started to get run at the nickel, but the trial began during the Dolphins’ 11-day road trip to Chicago and Detroit,” Isaiah Smalls of the Miami Herald. “At the time, he had three sound veterans in his ear —z veteran nickel Mike Hilton as well as safeties Ifeatu Melifonwu and Minkah Fitzpatrick, both of whom have gotten snaps at the position.”
He impressed in the preseason, eventually earning starting reps against the Jacksonville Jaguars. With Hilton cut, it is his position now.
Coaching Staff Raves About Jason Marshall At Nickel
Head coach Mike McDaniel certainly likes Marshall’s fit. The head man was extremely complimentary of Marshall’s skill set, even for him.
“I know he’s done a phenomenal job and really, really been pumped up about how he’s attacked a position that doesn’t appear not normal for him, doesn’t appear new to him,” coach Mike McDaniel said at his presser.
Famed defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver is also pumped up about Marshall’s new role.
“You know you look at him sometimes you think, ‘Oh man, this guy could be a linebacker, but he has the movement skills of a DB,’” Weaver said. “I think Jason’s skill set gives you an opportunity to not only play him outside but inside as well. Then his physicality, again, that we weren’t really sure about until we put him in a game and we saw him make that TFL on the nickel pressure.”
Marshall Is A Miami Kid
Marshall is a Florida man. The 22-year-old turns 23 this Saturday, he was born in Miami, spent four year in Gainesville, and now returns home.
“Being a little kid and just going to the stadium, sitting in the stadium seats and like, ‘Man, I’m dreaming to be here.’” Marshall told Travis Wingfield. “And today that opportunity came up and now I’m going to be on the field.”
It’s going to be very easy to route for the hometown kid who is pumped up about his new starting role.
“Honestly, it has been a smooth transition,” Marshall said as reported by Isaiah Smalls. “There were some things that happened with the depth of the team so I’m just doing anything I can to help the team.”
“I’m with it,” Marshall continued. “Being versatile — looking around the league, that’s how guys make it as far as being versatile, being able to play multiple positions.”
