Morris, one of the best players in Dolphins history, passed away on Saturday evening, with his son sharing the news on social media.

The former RB was part of the famous Fins team that went undefeated in 1972. He joined the team as a third-round pick out of West Texas State and played in the NFL from 1969 to 76. A three-time Pro Bowler, Morris spent all but one season of his career in Miami, winning two Super Bowls.

The 1972 Dolphins team remains the only team in NFL history to play an entire season without losing a single game.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Eugene “Mercury” Morris, legendary Miami Dolphins running back and cherished member of the NFL family, at the age of 77,” his son shared via X/Twitter on Sunday morning.

“Known for his electrifying speed and dynamic play, Mercury was a cornerstone of the Dolphins’ historic 1972 undefeated season and a two-time Super Bowl champion. His talent and passion left an indelible mark on the sport, and his three Pro Bowl selections only solidified his place among football’s greats.

“Beyond the field, Mercury was a devoted father, a loving brother, a loyal friend, and a pillar in the community. His presence extended far beyond football, as he touched the lives of many throughout his time in Miami.”

The cause of death was not immediately disclosed.

A star in college and a first-team All-American in 1968, Mercury Morris led the league in rushing touchdowns in 1972 and also led all chasers in yards per carry the following year.

He ended his NFL career with 4,133 yards and 31 touchdowns. He also recorded over 3,000 yards and three touchdowns as a kick returner.

TPS sends condolences to Morris’ family, friends, and loved ones.

Rest In Peace, Mercury Morris (1947-2024).
