Concerns about Miami Dolphins edge defender Jaelan Phillips’s recovery from his Achilles injury in 2023 have shifted positively. Originally, doubts pertained to whether Phillips would be game-ready for the 2024 season opener. Now, the focus is on determining how extensively he can be utilized in the early games, starting with the opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

This shift in concern is a preferable scenario, according to defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver. “We have to be attentive to his physical responses,” Weaver commented before a recent practice. “We shouldn’t limit his playtime strictly by numbers, but we do need a strategy that allows him to endure the whole season. However, counting him out isn’t something I’d consider. His swift recovery and the significant presence he’s shown in practice are proof of his resilience.”

Phillips rejoined practice last week after being taken off the Active/Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. He did not participate in the preseason game against the Washington Commanders and is expected to miss the upcoming preseason finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Despite this, his performance in training has been promising. “He’s looked excellent – just as we anticipated,” Weaver stated.

As for veteran defensive lineman Calais Campbell, managing his playtime will be crucial given his age. Campbell, set to turn 38 in September, played 712 snaps for the Atlanta Falcons last season, covering 63 percent of the defensive snaps. Reducing his snaps compared to teammates like Christian Wilkins and Zach Sieler, who each played over 80 percent last season, would be ideal to keep him fresh, particularly for crucial late-season games and potential playoff contention.

Campbell discussed the balance of maintaining game readiness while managing workload. “We haven’t set specific limits, but they’re keen on keeping me fresh for key moments late in the game and the season,” he explained. His optimal involvement ranges around 35-40 plays per game, although this can vary. Ultimately, Campbell emphasizes being available during critical game moments to contribute to potential victories.
