Jonnu Smith, the tight end recently signed by the Miami Dolphins, had his debut in a preseason matchup against the Washington Commanders this past Saturday. Wearing the Dolphins jersey for the first time, Smith caught four passes totaling 23 yards. Although these numbers might not jump off the page, his limited playtime on the field gives a hint rather than the full scope of his capabilities.

Joining Miami on a two-year deal in March, Smith showcased a taste of the potential roles he might play in Miami’s offense with the regular season approaching. His 9-yard reception on a misdirection touch pass was particularly noteworthy, suggesting it might be a strategic element the Dolphins plan to leverage.

During a post-game interview, Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa praised Smith’s adaptability and skill. “He’s used in multiple ways, as you have seen today.

We consider him a ‘YAC monster,’ someone who not only catches the ball but also racks up yards after the catch,” said Tagovailoa. “He’s incredibly versatile in our offense.”

Mike McDaniel, the Dolphins’ coach, also highlighted the strategic advantage of having dynamic players like Smith. He remarked, “In moments when the offense is in rhythm, opposing defenses often defend the space, making it crucial to have aggressive playmakers. Jonnu is a fantastic addition who we can deploy in numerous ways.”

Smith’s tenure last season with the Atlanta Falcons was productive, as he recorded 50 receptions for 582 yards and three touchdowns. The Dolphins, who last year had only Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle surpass the 400-yard receiving mark, will look to Smith to boost their offense.

Smith’s initial appearance in a Dolphins uniform has indicated he may well be on track to meet, if not exceed, his performances with the Falcons, injecting much-needed vibrancy and versatility into the Miami offense as the regular season inches closer.
