The football world bids farewell to a true legend of the game, Mike Kolen, who passed away at the age of 76. Kolen, a name synonymous with ferocity on the field, left a legacy that stretched from the collegiate ranks at Auburn University to the professional gridirons of the NFL, where he cemented his place as a defensive stalwart for the Miami Dolphins. Kolen’s journey from the 12th round draft pick to a prominent figure in some of the most memorable moments in NFL history is a testament to his tenacity and skill.

Mike Kolen, affectionately known as “Captain Crunch,” earned his nickname through the sheer force of his tackles, striking fear into the hearts of opponents with his powerful and unyielding playing style. This reputation wasn’t just built on hearsay; it was forged in the intense battles on the field, making him a revered figure among teammates and fans alike. His impact at Auburn was so significant that the university honored him with an award in his name, celebrating the kind of exemplary leadership and performance he exhibited.

Despite being a late pick in the 1970 NFL Draft, Kolen defied expectations by carving out an illustrious seven-season tenure with the Miami Dolphins. His story is one of determination, proving that draft numbers can’t confine talent. During his time with the Dolphins, Kolen’s presence was instrumental, contributing to the team’s prowess and helping them reach the pinnacle of the sport by starting in three Super Bowls.

One of Kolen’s most memorable contributions came in 1974 during the playoff clash against the Oakland Raiders, an event that would later be known as the ‘Sea of Hands’ play. Although the Dolphins didn’t emerge victorious, Kolen’s performance in that game encapsulated his commitment and skill, imbuing the play with a sense of historical significance that fans and scholars of the game still reminisce about today.

Kolen’s battles weren’t confined to the field, however. In 2017, he publicly revealed his diagnosis with Alzheimer’s, attributing the condition to the countless hits he endured throughout his football career. This disclosure underscored the physical toll the sport can exact on its athletes, bringing attention to the broader conversation about player safety and health in football.

His illustrious career earned him a spot in the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1985, reflecting not only his exceptional abilities on the field but also his stature as one of Auburn and Alabama’s sporting icons. This honor, among others, helped cement Kolen’s legacy, ensuring his contributions to football, both at the collegiate and professional levels, would be remembered for generations.

Mike Kolen’s passing marks the end of an era for many who admired his tenacity, skill, and dedication to the sport of football. Through his achievements and challenges, he leaves behind a legacy that transcends the game, embodying the spirit of determination and resilience.
