The Miami Dolphins’ 2024 offseason commenced on a low note, initially marked by the departure of key players. Christian Wilkins made headlines as he left the team for the Las Vegas Raiders due to contract disputes, and Andrew Van Ginkle also exited, accepting an irresistible offer from the Minnesota Vikings.

Further exacerbating the Dolphins’ situation, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio transitioned to Philadelphia, prompting Miami to secure Anthony Weaver from the Baltimore Ravens as their new defensive mastermind. As the Dolphins venture into the third year under Mike McDaniel’s offensive strategy, the pressure intensifies for the team to secure a playoff victory, a milestone that has remained elusive with the team’s performance dwindling in the latter part of the season traditionally.

As the Dolphins aim to make significant headway this season, here are five critical areas of focus:

The departure of Wilkins and Van Ginkle, who collectively contributed 18 sacks and 114 quarterback pressures, creates a substantial gap in Miami’s defense. This heightens the need for Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips to reclaim their top form. The team has made notable additions, including several defensive tackles, four linebackers, and rookies Chop Robinson and Mohamed Kamara, with hopes to compensate for the lost production.

Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips, both of whom had their previous seasons curtailed by injuries, are pivotal for revitalizing Miami’s defense. Phillips showed a formidable presence with seven sacks and 27 pressures in just eight games before an injury halted his season. Chubb, on the other hand, recorded 13 sacks and 70 pressures, positioning him among the league’s top pass-rushers before his injury.

As Anthony Weaver steps in as the new defensive coordinator, the spotlight is on his plan to leverage the talents of Chubb and Phillips, alongside the strategic use of Jaelan Ramsey, to fortify Miami’s defense. The anticipated return of Chubb and Phillips to their peak performance could indeed transform the Dolphins into a formidable force in the league.

Overall, the Dolphins face a rebuild and restructure defense that hinges significantly on recovering from key losses and leveraging new strategies and talents, aiming not just to compete but to excel in the upcoming season.
