Anthony Weaver, in his role overseeing the Miami Dolphins’ defense, faces a seemingly straightforward decision when it comes to selecting his secondary lineup for the 2024 season. Both the cornerback and safety positions stand out as some of the least complicated choices for him, thanks particularly to the clear talent present within the team’s roster.

Weaver, who boasts a background as a secondary coach, prefers his players to exhibit both physicality and intellect on the field. Lucky for him, the Dolphins possess a solid core group that aligns with his coaching philosophy.

This puts Weaver in an advantageous position, allowing him to concentrate on molding these players to fit his system more efficiently, rather than being burdened by players who don’t match his desired profile. Entering the 2024 season, Weaver is presented with a nearly blank slate, giving him the opportunity to shape the team’s defense to his liking.

For Weaver and the Dolphins’ coaching staff, determining the best fit for the cornerback positions might pose a challenge. The team plans to have Jalen Ramsey and Kendall Fuller as their primary outside corners for 2024. Kader Kohou is expected to take on duties behind them and in the slot, while Cam Smith, the second-round pick from the previous year who found himself out of favor under Vic Fangio, is slated for more playing time both in training camp and throughout the season.

At the safety positions, Nik Needham and Elijah Campbell are currently under consideration for a move deeper into the field, a shift that would allow for more flexibility in the team’s roster configuration. As for newcomers and veterans alike, Ethan Bonner and undrafted rookie Storm Duck will be under scrutiny throughout camp, whereas Siran Neal, with seven seasons to his name, is almost assured a spot on the roster.

Beyond the primary quartet of Ramsey, Fuller, Kohou, and Neal, Miami’s secondary depth is somewhat lacking. Shifting Needham or Campbell back to cornerback could provide a solution.

Both Smith and Duck, while not yet established, show promise. Safety positions will likely be anchored by Jordan Poyer and Jevon Holland, with Needham and Campbell cross-training for added depth.

The rookie trio of Patrick McMorris, Mark Perry, and Jordan Colbert will serve as the immediate backups at safety.

The Dolphins could still be on the lookout for additional safety help as the season approaches. While speculation on potential acquisitions is widespread, securing someone of Justin Simmons’ caliber would indeed make a powerful statement and significantly bolster the team’s defensive lineup.
