The Los Angeles Lakers are the most popular sports team in America, and they’re about to gain even more star power.
They recently acquired superstar Luka Dončić, but he’ll need a co-star to help lead him into his 30s, especially since he’s only 26 years old.
LeBron James is in the final year of his contract, and there are rumors swirling about him either joining another team, like the Cavaliers or Warriors, or potentially retiring. The Lakers need to act fast.
While it’s rare to see superstars traded mid-season, recent examples like Aunt and Dan show that trades like this happen every year.
If a mega superstar, like Giannis Antetokounmpo, becomes available, the Lakers will likely be the top contender. Here’s why:
Bucks Receive: G Austin Reaves, F Rui Hachimura, G Dalton Knecht 2026, LAL 1st Rounder, 2028 LAL 1st Rounder, 2030 LAL 1st Rounder
Lakers Receive: Giannis Antetokoumpo
The Lakers’ roster is surprisingly strong, with solid role players like Marcus Smart, Jake Lehigh, Gabe Vincent, and more. However, these players may help win a championship this season, but they won’t be enough for future seasons.
The Lakers Have an Austin Reaves Problem
The biggest concern surrounding the Lakers is LeBron James’ future. Austin Reeves is also a pivotal part of the team, but there is a clear path forward to resolve the situation.
Reeves is in the final year of his contract, and the Lakers have two options: either give him a 30+ million dollar extension, making him the number two star, or trade him for an established superstar.
While I like Reeves and he had a fantastic season, he struggled in the playoffs. Adding an offensive-minded star at the guard position alongside Luka Dončić may not be the best formula for a championship run.
Milwaukee May Not Be Able To Keep Giannis
Looking at the roster, there are still gaps. Players like Kyle Kuzma are on tough contracts, and Myles Turner is not a true second star. With Giannis entering his 30s, there’s a chance he could become frustrated with Milwaukee and demand a trade. If that happens, the Lakers need to be ready to pounce.
Why Giannis Fits on the Lakers
Acquiring Giannis would set the Lakers up for the next 5 to 10 years without a doubt. With this duo, and players on veteran minimum deals surrounding them, I’m confident that Giannis’ defense and ability to dominate in the paint, combined with Luka Dončić’s elite offense, would immediately make this duo the best in the league — on par with what we saw from Steph Curry and Kevin Durant.
We know the Lakers would have to give up a lot to make this happen — likely Austin Reeves, Dalton Connect, and multiple first-round picks — but it would be totally worth it. If anything, the Bucks would probably be the ones to turn it down, as they’re likely to receive better offers from other teams.
