Odell Beckham Jr., the three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver, will not be starting the 2024 NFL season on the field for the Miami Dolphins as he has been placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. Despite his objections and belief in his readiness to play, the decision was made by the Dolphins’ management to sideline him for additional recovery time.

Dolphins General Manager Chris Grier explained the decision in a recent press conference, stating that while Beckham was close to returning, the team prioritized his long-term health over immediate participation. “He did not want to go down.

He feels he is very close… But for us, it was the long play.

We didn’t want him to rush back,” Grier remarked.

Beckham signed a one-year contract filled with performance bonuses with the Dolphins during the off-season but has yet to practice with the team due to recovery from an unspecified procedure. The Dolphins were reportedly aware that Beckham’s availability for Week 1 could be compromised when they signed him. His last active season was with the Baltimore Ravens in 2023, where he posted 35 receptions for 565 yards and three touchdowns, following a missed 2022 season due to an ACL tear at Super Bowl LVI.

Under NFL rules, Beckham’s placement on the PUP list requires him to miss at least the first four games of the season. The Dolphins hope that this cautious approach will ultimately benefit both the player and the team in their quest for success this season.
