Zay Flowers is a guy that loves to practice and it was evident Wednesday at minicamp.
Flowers came up a little gimpy after going high to catch a potential touchdown during a red-zone drill but was back lined up wide very soon after.
That’s when Flowers had arguably the play of the day, elevating over cornerback Trayvon Mullen to snag a touchdown in the back corner of the end zone. Flowers is only 5-foot-9, but he “Mossed” the 6-foot-2 corner.
Flowers also showed good concentration hauling in a pass early in practice that was tipped over the middle by linebacker Trenton Simpson. Flowers looks ready to build on his franchise record-setting rookie season in Year 2.
Here are more notes from Wednesday’s practice:
- After suiting up on Tuesday, cornerback Marlon Humphrey did not practice Wednesday. Wide receiver/returner Deonte Harty (personal), safety Kyle Hamilton (elbow), running back Keaton Mitchell (knee), outside linebacker Adisa Isaac (hamstring), and center Nick Samac are still out.
- Tight end Isaiah Likely shined for a second straight day. He snatched a tightly-contested catch against Simpson, wrestling it away from the linebacker while tightrope-walking the sideline. Then later in practice, Lamar Jackson’s pass seemed to be floated a bit too long for the open Likely, but he rose high to make another one-handed grab.
- Though Likely had the highlight-reel catches, Charlie Kolar was the busiest tight end on the day. He caught a bunch of passes, including one down the seam that drew praise from Offensive Coordinator Todd Monken. The Ravens envisioned the beefed-up Kolar being a key blocker this year, but he’s showing that if they need him to move the chains, he’s another weapon they can count on.
- Wide receiver Tylan Wallace had an up and down day. He had an early drop during 11-on-11s but rebounded soon after with an impressive leaping catch over the middle. Tylan later elicited some shouts from teammates when he shook Stephens on a comeback route for a grab, then also made a contested catch against Stephens.
- Veteran cornerback Ka’dar Hollman made an end zone interception when a deep ball to Rashod Bateman was juggled and Hollman came away with it.
- The Ravens continued to mix-and-match their offensive line as they get a look at players. As Offensive Line Coach Joe D’Alessandris said, Daniel Faalele got some work at right guard and Andrew Vorhees played some at center, as well as left guard.
- Defensive tackle Justin Madubuike deflected a fourth-down pass during the first-team’s two-minute drill, eliciting a big reaction from the defense, which has looked impressive during minicamp. Broderick Washington also seems to have turned up his pass rushing game, and Travis Jones has been dominant at times this offseason. Jones came up from behind Jackson and shouted in an effort to scare the QB.
- Undrafted rookie cornerback Bump Cooper Jr. got what would have been a pick-six cutting underneath a route during 7-on-7s to intercept rookie quarterback Devin Leary.
- Veteran backup quarterback Josh Johnson had a strong practice. He led the second-team offense down the field for a touchdown during a two-minute drill, capped by a touchdown pass to undrafted rookie wide receiver Isaiah Washington, who made an impressive toe-tap grab.
- Undrafted rookie outside linebacker Joe Evans had some of his veteran teammates hollering praise for a series of strong pass rushes. Evans posted big sack numbers (28 career) at Iowa. At 6-foot-1, Evans is two inches shorter than anyone else in the Ravens’ outside linebacker room, but he’s flashing.
