Rams’ Injury Woes Open Door for Stafford Trade to Dolphins

The Los Angeles Rams have endured a devastating start to the 2024 season, losing key players like Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua to injuries. Nacua has landed on IR, and it’s been reported that Kupp will soon join him. The team’s offensive line has also been decimated, with the loss of offensive linemen Jonah Jackson, Steve Avila, and Joe Noteboom, contributing to a dismal 29.2 PFF team pass-blocking grade that threatens Matthew Stafford’s performance.

Amidst this adversity, the Miami Dolphins emerge as a potential suitor for Stafford. With Tua Tagovailoa’s future uncertain, the Dolphins could seek an experienced quarterback to lead their offense. Miami possesses elite pass-catchers in Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and De’Von Achane, offering Stafford an opportunity to thrive.

The trade could face logistical obstacles, as Stafford has three years remaining on his contract with a substantial salary of $76 million in base salary due. However, if Tua retires, the Dolphins may be able to negotiate an injury settlement that would make pursuing Stafford financially feasible.

Conversely, the Rams could acquire valuable draft capital from the Dolphins in exchange for Stafford. With a solid core of players despite limited draft picks, additional assets would facilitate a swift rebuild for Los Angeles.

Ultimately, a trade between the Rams and Dolphins could benefit both teams. Miami would maintain competitiveness by acquiring Stafford, while the Rams would accelerate their transition by obtaining draft picks and preparing for the post-Stafford era.
