The Baltimore Ravens had wanted to bring star pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney back in the early stages of free agency, but he left the title contender at the alter to take on the challenge of turning his hometown Carolina Panthers into a viable contender once again.
Clowney recorded 9.5 sacks last season, which is the best mark in a career that landed him three Pro Bowl nods and an All-Pro selection, while shooting his pressure rate skyward. Carolina came coming with a big multi-year offer, and the Ravens were unwilling to match as they try to find depth elsewhere
Clowney said that he wanted to return to Carolina for quite some time, but wanted to be “mature enough” to handle the responsibility that came with playing so close to home. The former No. 1 overall pick was everything the Ravens could have hoped for, and then some, during his lone season with the team.
Clowney said goodbye to Ravens fans with an Instagram post, thanking “the unbelievable Ravens community. Clowney said his teamates from last year “are forever brothers” and added that he “will always look at my time in Baltimore as a blessing.” Even thought he only played one year, Clowney left town with a ton of good will.
