The Miami Dolphins have decisively chosen Skylar Thompson as their backup quarterback, parting ways with Mike White, according to a report from ESPN. White, who had previously inked a two-year contract to support starting QB Tua Tagovailoa, failed to secure his spot despite a noteworthy stint with the New York Jets in 2022. His release reportedly saves the Dolphins $3.5 million in salary cap space, albeit leaving $1.71 million in dead cap.

During the preseason, White’s performance was lackluster as he managed only 20 completions on 43 attempts for 179 yards, failing to throw a single touchdown or interception. Thompson, on the other hand, showcased stronger capabilities and leadership.

In two out of three games, Thompson was Miami’s leading passer. His preseason efforts culminated impressively against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers where he threw for 190 yards and two touchdowns, recording 19 completions on 27 attempts with one interception.

Thompson, a seventh-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, has continued to carve out his place in the Dolphins lineup. He previously secured a spot on the 53-man roster during his rookie year with a solid preseason performance.

Thompson also notably started two games last season, including a critical Week 18 victory over the Jets, where he completed 20 of 31 passes for 152 yards, propelling Miami into the playoffs. Although the Dolphins were ousted in the Super Wild Card Weekend, Thompson gained valuable experience, throwing for 220 yards and a touchdown during the postseason game.

With this lineup shift, the Dolphins seem poised to enhance their quarterback depth, betting on Thompson’s upward trajectory to solidify their offense behind Tagovailoa.
