The Miami Dolphins have a bit of a worrisome quarterback situation on their hands heading into the 2025 campaign. Tua Tagovailoa is a strong option when he’s healthy and starting, but the problem is that injuries have plagued him throughout his career. If he ends up missing time, Zach Wilson and Quinn Ewers are the options behind him, and neither guy inspires much confidence.

The good news is that, if the Dolphins want to reinforce this position, there is still time to do so, as there are several veteran options who could become available in the coming days. One guy who seemingly isn’t available anymore is Cleveland Browns starting quarterback Joe Flacco, but this shocking trade pitch would see Miami swoop in and swing a deal for him before the start of the season.

Dolphins’ Joe Flacco Trade Pitch

Play

Dolphins receive: Joe Flacco

Browns receive: 2027 sixth-round pick

The Browns entered training camp with the most intriguing quarterback battle across the league. Flacco was competing against the likes of Kenny Pickett and a pair of rookies, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. It always seemed like the 40-year-old veteran had the inside track to start come Week 1, and sure enough, he was revealed to have won Cleveland’s starting quarterback job on Monday.

On the surface, that decision marries the Browns to Flacco, but that may not necessarily be the case. The Browns are pretty clearly rebuilding, which is why they took fliers on guys like Pickett, Gabriel, and Sanders this offseason. Flacco gives them the best shot of winning in 2025, but is that really what this franchise wants?

Flacco’s value is never going to be higher than it is currently, so while the team named him their Week 1 starter, there’s no rule saying they can’t change their mind. The Dolphins could certainly benefit from having a tried-and-true veteran backing up Tagovailoa in the event he gets injured again, and even as he approaches the end of his career, it’s tough to argue that Flacco isn’t better than either Wilson or Ewers.

Again, Flacco doesn’t hold much value beyond this season, but the 2025 campaign is shaping up to be a very important one for several key figures in Miami. If the franchise wants their best shot of succeeding this year, they need to have their quarterback position well stocked, which is why making a surprise play for Flacco on the trade market may not be such a bad idea.

Would Dolphins, Browns Be Interested in This Joe Flacco Trade?

Let’s state the obvious; any trade involving Flacco became exponentially less likely when the Browns named him their Week 1 starter. Cleveland clearly is planning on relying on him to at least start the season, but crazier things have happened in the NFL. If Miami comes in with a sixth-round pick, which isn’t an awful haul considering the circumstances surrounding Flacco, that could be a tough offer for the front office to pass up.

If the Dolphins are going to trade for a stronger backup quarterback, Flacco would certainly be a sensible option. However, they haven’t really shown any signs of being worried about having to turn to Wilson or Ewers, and with the Browns putting their eggs in Flacco’s basket for the time being, the chances of this deal happening are virtually nonexistent for the time being.
