Fast & Furious’ Final Movie Update Is Good News After Fast X’s Confusing Franchise Status

Following the tenth installment (without counting Hobbs & Shaw) of the Fast & Furious franchise, some were curious about its status, but thankfully, Vin Diesel cleared up the confusion via an update on the upcoming eleventh film. The franchise is undoubtedly one of the biggest action series ever, with ten successful movies, a spin-off (and more to come), and a television series. It has a combined gross of over $7 billion at the box office since the first film, The Fast & the Furious, debuted in 2001 and has been the focus of attractions at amusement parks, toys, video games, and more.

Unfortunately, all good things must end, and the Fast & Furious franchise’s ending is set to manifest in the eleventh movie. At least Fast & Furious 11 will feature the main saga’s conclusion, while spin-offs and stand-alone projects will continue the series. However, while many have had an inkling that the upcoming film would serve as the central timeline’s finale, comments from those involved in the series, Fast X‘s ending, and production on the next movie have led some to be confused regarding the franchise’s status. But Diesel, who plays Dom Toretto, finally gave fans a concrete answer regarding the main saga’s ending.

Fast & Furious 12 Returning To The Franchise’s Roots Makes Fast X’s Ending Even Worse 1 Year Later

January 11, 2025

Vin Diesel posted an update on the status of Fast & Furious 11 on Instagram in February 2024, and the caption cleared up confusion regarding the franchise’s conclusion. According to Diesel, the upcoming eleventh film (and twelfth overall installment in the Fast & Furious series) is the “finale” of the central story’s timeline. The actor wrote, “This grand finale is not just an ending; it’s a celebration of the incredible family we’ve built together.”

Of course, already announced spin-offs and stand-alone projects, like Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Reyes, an untitled female-led spin-off, and more, will continue the Fast & Furious franchise without Diesel. But the story featuring Dom, Brian, Letty, Han, and many more that began with The Fast and the Furious in 2001 will conclude almost 24 years later with Fast & Furious 11. So, fans have some time to officially prepare to say goodbye to the series’ beloved characters when the finale debuts in 2025 (barring any delays).

Fast & Furious 11 is scheduled to be released on April 4, 2025.

The arrival of Dwayne Johnson’s Hobbs in Fast Five took the Fast & Furious franchise to a new level, but 14 years on, The Rock needs to save it again.

Vin Diesel and the family return for the tenth installment of the Fast & Furious franchise in Fast X. Charlize Theron returns as Cipher joining forces with Dante Reyes, a former foe of the Fast Family seeking revenge for the death of his father Hernan Reyes, after the events of Fast Five. Fast X is part one of a two-part conclusion to the franchise.

Fast X is structured as a two-part movie, but the second part, aka Fast & Furious 11, was not filmed back-to-back with its predecessor and, as of the writing of this article, still has not been filmed. Typically, principal photography on two-part projects occurs back-to-back because the characters and story are usually the same, and doing it this way saves money and time. For example, Marvel consecutively shot Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame in 2017 and 2018, and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 were filmed back-to-back in 2013 and 2014.

Fast & Furious 11 should be filled with exciting stunts and intense action, but it must also feature a captivating story and provide a fulfilling ending for each main character.

It’s unclear why Universal Pictures didn’t plan to shoot Fast X and Fast & Furious 11 consecutively. The script for the eleventh film likely wasn’t ready in time, but it should have been, given that its story is linked to Fast X‘s. However, one way or another, the main saga will conclude in the 2025 movie, even after Vin Diesel previously teased that Fast X could be the first installment in a trilogy (which added to the aforementioned uncertainty). The finale of Fast & Furious will not be a three-parter; it will take place in Fast & Furious 11, despite the confusion.

What Fast & Furious 11 Needs To Do To Be A Satisfying Fast Saga Ending

Fast & Furious must learn from the mistakes of others and give the people what they want in the 2025 movie (without becoming strictly fan service).

Now that fans know the main saga of the Fast & Furious franchise will definitively conclude in the eleventh movie, they just have to worry about whether it will be a satisfying ending. Sometimes, film series fail to stick the landing during their finales, which could ruin the entire franchise for some. Inconsistent storylines, bizarre character endings, and unwarranted plot twists can leave a bitter taste in the audience’s mouth, so Fast & Furious must learn from the mistakes of others and give the people what they want in the 2025 movie (without becoming strictly fan service).

Of course, Fast & Furious 11 should be filled with exciting stunts and intense action. But it must also feature a captivating story and provide a fulfilling ending for each main character (including Paul Walker’s Brian O’Conner). As long as the writers keep the heart of the Fast & Furious franchise in mind, the finale should be satisfying for those who have been there since the beginning.

Fast and Furious 11 is the final movie in the Fast Saga. It reunites Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto with the rest of the cast for one last ride. However, the franchise is open for spin-off films like Hobbs & Shaw afterward.
